On Monday afternoon during Miami’s coaches press conference, news broke that Miami Hurricanes Safety Markeith Williams has elected to transfer out of the program.
A 4-star recruit in the class of 2022, Williams was a rotational depth player in Miami’s secondary. As noted above, Williams totaled 31 tackles in 25
games over 3 years in the program. He did not appear in either of Miami’s first 2 games this season, which brought us to this announcement today.
UPDATE: Barry Jackson of The Miami Herald, among others, reports that Williams was dismissed from the Hurricanes program due to multiple violations of team rules.
That 6’1” 170lb Williams had potential coming out of Orlando (FL) Evans HS. He was very highly recruited, and chose Miami over Ohio State and Nebraska. However, he wasn’t really able to make an impact on Miami’s depth chart, even with the secondary in 2024 being one of the worst in the country.
The final straw was the fact that Miami has recruited, and developed, over Williams in the last few classes. Not only are transfer Safeties Zechariah Poyser and Jakobe Thomas substantially better than Williams, but true Freshman Safety Bryce Fitzgerald has come in and worked his way up the depth chart in front of Williams as well. With Fitzgerald’s ascension to being the #2 Safety on the depth chart — and directly in front of Williams at his position — Williams made the reasonable choice to transfer elsewhere in the hopes of finding a new start, and the playing time he most assuredly won’t find here at Miami.
Williams redshirted in 2022, so I’m not sure what benefit he can get from leaving the team at this juncture. But that’s his business, not mine.
In any event, we thank Markeith Williams for his time at The U, and wish him the best in the future.
