The Portland Trail Blazers stormed back from an early deficit to earn a 124-113 win over the Utah Jazz on Friday evening. Portland rode a massive run to take control of the game in the second quarter and would hold the lead the rest of the way.
The Blazers were led in scoring by Jrue Holiday and Scoot Henderson who each totaled 25 points in the game. Donovan Clingan also added 21 points.
The Jazz were led by the game-high 31 points from Brice Sensabaugh. Cody Williams and Isaiah Collier had 19 and 17
points respectively to supplement Sensabaugh’s scoring output.
Player of the Game
Scoot Henderson had an uncharacteristically low three assists in the game. He managed to make up for the below-average playmaking performance with an incredible showing in almost every other facet. He scored 25 points on 8-14 from the field and a scorching 5-7 from behind the arc. He snagged 5 rebounds too. He did have five turnovers in the game, but overall it was a very complete performance off the bench for Henderson in 30 minutes of work.
Stat of the Night
Portland had 13 blocks in the game. They won that category 13-4 over the Jazz. Leading the way in the block party was Donovan Clingan who threatened a triple-double with 7 swats to go along with his 21 points and 14 rebounds. The entire night was rejection after rejection for the Jazz around the basket as seven Blazers finished with at least one block in the contest.
What We Noticed
Basketball is a game of runs. A 16-4 start for the Jazz was quickly followed with another 13-2 run as they opened up a massive 31-15 lead in the first quarter. What came next will be the main talking point from this contest.
Instead of rolling over and getting blown out, or even chipping away at the massive lead throughout the course of the game, Portland hit back hard. A 20-0 run bridging the first quarter and the second catapulted them to a 42-38 lead. They never relinquished their edge and were able to come away with a double-digit win after the slow start.
Up Next
The Blazers are heading on the road for an afternoon bout with the Philadelphia 76ers on Sunday March 15th at 3:00 p.m. PST.
