One of the candidates in the Steelers’ head coaching search might be off the board, with the Miami Dolphins and Green Bay Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley “closing in” on a deal to make Hafley Miami’s
next head coach, according to reports from Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero of NFL Network.
Bleacher Report’s Jordan Schultz also reported that the Dolphins “will hire” Hafley.
Hafley is one of the nnine candidates the Steelers requested to interview in this year’s coaching cycle. He interviewed with Pittsburgh on Saturday, per Pelissero.
So far in the Steelers’ coaching search, Dolphins defensive coordinator Anthony Weaver and Vikings defensive coordinator Brian Flores have been the first to land second interviews with Pittsburgh.
Hafley landing in Miami would mark the third head coaching vacancy to be filled this offseason, with former Ravens head coach John Harbaugh signing with the New York Giants, and former Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski joining the Atlanta Falcons.
However, a new head coaching job opened on Monday, with the Bills firing head coach Sean McDermott.
