This afternoon, the Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) elected Bruce Meyer as interim executive director. Meyer replaces Tony Clark, who resigned from the position earlier this week. Meyer is expected to remain in charge of the collective-bargaining negotiations for the players union with the current CBA expiring on December 1, 2026, according to Jeff Passan of ESPN.
Clark, who spent 15 seasons as a big league first baseman, had been the the executive director of the MLBPA since 2013. Clark resigned due to an alleged inappropriate relationship with his sister-in-law who had been worked for the union since 2023. Clark had also been under investigation by federal authorities related to the union’s finances.
Meyer, 64, had been with the union since 2018 and had served as deputy executive director since 2022. His election was unanimous, accordingly to multiple reports, with all the eight members of MLB’s executive committee, all 30 team player represenatives and its 34 minor league members voting in favor of Meyer.
Meyer does not have universal support according to Evan Drellich of The Athletic.
Negotiations for a new collective bargaining agreement are expected to start this Spring between the MLBPA and the owners.
According to a statement published by the MLBPA, Matt Nussbaum was elected interim deputy executive director. Nussbaum joined MLBPA in 2011.
