Manchester United have lost their first match of the 2025/26 Barclays Women’s Super League season. The Reds fell 1-0 at home to Aston Villa at Leigh Sports Village on Saturday.
A slow first half saw United struggle to even find a chance on tartget, allowing the Villains time to settle and strike through Miriael Taylor after the half hour mark.
United were more enterprising in the second half, finding most of their chance and a few efforts on target in the first 25 minutes after the restart. Ella Toone
missed on a couple of strikes, starting a period of dominance from United after Villa had a few efforts denied at the start of the second half. Toone and Galton had two of the best chances for the Reds, but both were denied.
In the final minutes, Marc Skinner sent on Rachel Williams for Jess Park in an effort to add bodies forward. She got a good chance on a cross from Anna Samberg, but saw her header go right at the goalkeeper. Melvine Malard too saw a chance pass her by, and the Reds ran out of time.
United had a nervy return to league action last week in a 3-2 victory at Brighton & Hove Albion, but the failure to score against a Villa side that has struggled to start the season. Although it should be noted, Villa still have the third best defensive record in terms of goals conceded, behind only United and league leaders Chelsea.
The Reds will return to action this Wednesday against Paris Saint-Germain at Old Trafford.
