The Miami Dolphins cut their roster to the NFL’s 53-man regular-season limit on Sunday, then immediately started making major changes to that “final” roster in Monday’s waiver process. The Dolphins claimed seven players off waivers, the most in the league, as they churn the bottom of their roster and try to find the right combination of players for the 2026 season.
Heading into the year, the Dolphins have the league’s youngest roster, and it is not close. The Dolphins’ players average 25. They are
almost two years younger than the league average of just under 27. Miami is clearly in a developmental mindset, hoping this group of players will grow together and form the nucleus of the team’s rebuild.
The Palm Beach Post’s Joe Schad looked at the Dolphins’ young roster and tied it back to comments from Miami general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan in March – specifically the Dolphins front office trying to shake Miami out of the mediocrity that had settled around the team for years.
Nearly half of Miami’s initial 53-man roster is aged 22, 23 or 24.
Patience is required.
Every or almost every decision general manager Jon-Eric Sullivan has made and will make in the coming months is with a long-term lens.
“We can’t live in the middle,” Sullivan forewarned in March.
