Newcastle United continues to assess attacking options ahead of January, with Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo remaining on the club’s radar after the Magpies previously scouted the Mozambique international.
According to TEAMtalk’s Graeme Bailey, Newcastle has now carried out further work on the 25-year-old and could challenge Sunderland for his signature if the Magpies decide to turn their interest into an active pursuit.
“Newcastle United have also carried out work on Catamo, meaning Sunderland could
face competition from their North East rivals if they decide to formalise their interest in January,” Bailey reported.
Sunderland made Catamo its leading right-wing target during the summer and was reportedly prepared to pay up to €40 million. Sporting refused to sell, insisting on a figure around the player’s €60 million (£50.3 million) release clause.
According to Transfermarkt, Sunderland’s figure was closer to the player’s market value, which is estimated at around €35 million, rather than to Sporting’s asking price.
Newcastle, meanwhile, is not alone in monitoring the situation alongside Sunderland. Bailey reported that Everton, Leeds United, Bournemouth and Brentford have also watched Catamo in recent weeks, while the winger remains interested in moving to England’s Premier League.
“Catamo was keen on the prospect of moving to England during the summer, and that desire remains unchanged,” Bailey wrote.
The Sporting attacker had recorded three goals and four assists heading into last weekend and remains under contract until 2029.
Would Catamo be worth pursuing at close to his €60 million release clause, or should Newcastle look for better value elsewhere? Share your thoughts in the comments.
