Has Thomas the Frank engine left the station?
According to multiple reports, Tottenham Hotspur have decided to finally sack Thomas Frank as head coach:
Though not yet official, a number of sources including David Ornstein at
The Athletic and Alasdair Gold are now reporting Frank’s reign of pragmatism is over, with Spurs now in the thick of a relegation battle.
With only two league wins since October, it seemed clear to all and sundry that Frank was never going to make it until next season; it was probably just a matter of time. Unfortunately for the Dane, the club’s poor performance on the pitch, deteriorating relationship with fans, and increased criticism from the media saw his position become untenable sooner rather than later, and with 12 days until Spurs’ next fixture, the gap in matches following yet another dour loss presented the perfect opportunity for the board to remove Frank from his position.
This should have been done weeks ago; I’m frankly (heh) amazed it wasn’t. The club is now at real risk of suffering relegation, and faces a dogfight to keep their heads above water. With crowd numbers dwindling and boos ringing, the ownership have finally acted.
There are reportedly some contingency plans in place; the board will likely now work through these various permutations as to what (and who) comes next to save the club from relegation.
More to follow.
