Bayern Munich Frauen have got the ball rolling in the Bundesliga with a commanding 4-1 win over Union Berlin.
Berlin away was probably Bayern’s toughest league fixture last season, with the champions having barely come away with a 3-2 win. Indeed, the hosts kept Bayern at bay and even came very close to scoring.
But this time, Bayern were not going to be troubled for long. Klara Bühl opened the scoring on 26 minutes with a beautiful free kick, and the Bavarians went into halftime a goal up.
It did not
take Bayern long to double their advantage. Pernille Harder let loose a powerful low drive from outside the box that the keeper could not get a strong hand to, and Bayern were up two with 47 minutes gone.
Bayern were in cruise control, and they added another one on the hour mark. This one, though, was a tad questionable, as Glódis Perla Viggósdóttir seemed to have forced the ball over the line with her arms.
Union eventually pulled a goal back with just over ten minutes to go, but new signing Sophie Proost put the game to bed in stoppage time with a nifty turn and low drive. Proost should have also won a penalty in the last second, but the referee remained silent, and Bayern had to settle for a 4-1 win.
Bayern have a bit of a break now, as their next game is not until next Monday. The champions will face Mainz 05 at the FC Bayern campus.
