Newcastle United has been working for more than two years on the modernization of its visual identity, with the club viewing its 1988 and current crest as a central part of its commercial and branding strategy heading toward its Vision 2030 ambitions.
Newcastle has now officially unveiled the crest that will replace the design used for nearly 40 years. The new badge will begin appearing progressively across digital platforms, signage and merchandise before being worn on the 2027-28 kits.
Newcastle spent 791 days consulting supporters throughout the process, and the finished crest deliberately remains close to its predecessor and current badge, with changes including a shorter and wider castle, symmetrical seahorses, a sharper overall shape and a central shield inspired by the badge worn by Newcastle’s 1969 Inter-Cities Fairs Cup-winning team.
“The club has asked supporters questions that we did not know the answers to, and they told us plainly: protect what we have, keep the elements we love, and do not start again,” CEO David Hopkinson said. “Every decision after that has been made inside the margins our fans drew, and it is only right that our fans have had the final and decisive say on the outcome.”
Newcastle originally announced plans to update the crest in May 2025, arguing that the intricacy and irregularity of the old design made consistent high-quality reproduction difficult across different formats.
The new badge is expected to appear on matchday shirts for the first time when Newcastle hosts Crystal Palace in the final home game of the current season, with Matthias Jaissle’s side set to wear the 2027-28 kit early.
The redesign forms part of a wider attempt to modernize Newcastle’s brand and create additional commercial opportunities as the club targets sustained success by the end of the decade.
