Rutgers cornerback Bo Mascoe has announced that he will be entering the transfer portal when it opens on January 2nd. He started all 12 games for the Scarlet Knights last season and will be leaving with two years of eligibility remaining.
Mascoe was the highest graded Rutgers defender last season by Pro FootballFocus. Oftentimes, he seemed like one of the few serviceable players on a Knights defense that was historically bad. For context, Rutgers was the second-worst scoring defense in the Big Ten
and the worst overall defense, letting up an average of 432.8 yards per game. Last season, Mascoe totaled 48 tackles, two forced fumbles, and one interception while being named an-All Big Ten honorable mention by the coaches and the media.
He first started to make his way onto the Rutgers scene in 2023 during their bowl game against Miami. Here, he contributed two tackles in the Knights’ first bowl win in 9 years. As a sophomore in 2024, Mascoe played in all 13 games and made four starts. He totaled 50 tackles, five pass breakups, an interception, and a fumble recovery.
Despite it being apparent that Rutgers will be undergoing a defensive overhaul in the portal, Mascoe was one of the players from last season who likely could have carried over as a starter next season. However, his departure leaves an even bigger hole to fill in the Knights’ secondary.
He joins running backs Sam Brown and CJ Campbell, OL John Stone, WR/KR Dane Partridge, and EDGE Jordan Walker as Knights who have declared their intentions to enter the portal.
His announcement was first broken by 247Sports.
