The Wisconsin Badgers take on their first Big Ten opponent of the season, as the undefeated Maryland Terrapins come to Camp Randall Stadium for the first time since November 2022.
Here is how the Badgers can knock off the Terps in Madison.
Eliminate Explosive Pass Plays from Maryland
Wisconsin is among the nation’s best in stopping the run, and, despite a 38-14 loss against Alabama, the Badgers held the Crimson Tide to 3.3 yards per carry. Maryland has struggled to establish a punishing ground game,
as the Terrapins averaged only 3.5 yards per carry against lesser-talented teams in Florida Atlantic, Northern Illinois, and Towson. That’s not to say the Terps cannot run the ball, but their offensive strength so far this year has been the pass.
Last Saturday, the Badgers allowed passing touchdowns of 43 yards, 13 yards, 75 yards, and 41 yards. Wisconsin is facing a talented true freshman quarterback in Malik Washington, who has a big arm capable of connecting with his wide receivers for chunk plays.
Offensive Line Steps Up
The young Wisconsin offensive line was confused and overpowered against Alabama, as the Badgers allowed four sacks in Tuscaloosa. The Crimson Tide used various stunts with their speed to disorient the Badger offensive line, making it a long day for the Wisconsin offense.
Now, while Maryland does not possess the same amount of talent as Alabama, the Terrapins still have an impressive defense coming to town. With Jake Renfro banged up, the Badgers’ offensive line must communicate better and follow through with their assignments.
Big Time Quarterback Play
Wisconsin might get some good news this Saturday, as Week 1 starter Billy Edwards Jr. could potentially suit up to play Maryland.
However, be it Edwards or sophomore Danny O’Neil starting, the Badgers need their quarterback to make big-time plays to earn their first Big Ten win.
O’Neil was 11-for-17 with one touchdown and two interceptions against Alabama last Saturday. While part of that performance was due to the poor offensive line play, that performance is not going to get it done in Big Ten play. According to O’Neil, timing and trust in the deep passes must improve moving forward.
This game is a “must-win” for Wisconsin, as they face one of the most demanding schedules in the nation. However, to take down the Terps, the Badgers need their starting quarterback to come through in the clutch and make the plays when it matters.
