Training camp 2026 has finally arrived for the Dallas Cowboys. Roster battles are set to begin, with some players fighting for starting roles, others for backup reps, and many just to hang on to the roster somehow.
Today, we’ll talk about a roster battle for a backup position. Not just any battle though, one that carries a lot of weight. But the winner of the competition is someone Cowboys fans hope to never see on the field in 2026.
We are talking about QB2. Right now, the battle is between Sam Howell
and Joe Milton II. Here’s why either might win.
Sam Howell
The Cowboys brought Howell in during the offseason, likely because they wanted competition since they weren’t yet satisfied with what they had. That’s one mark in his favor. Additionally, Howell has actually started for a season in the NFL. Of course, he didn’t start after that and his turnover problems were a key part of that. So there is good and bad to that experience.
Joe Milton III
Milton is a hyper-athletic, mobile QB with a rocket for an arm. Those are traits that you can do something with as a backup QB, but Milton has a flaw that is holding him back. Accuracy and touch on passes has eluded him for the most part. If he can settle down and get that part of his game going, he has big potential.
