The San Francisco 49ers were fortunate to have Robert Saleh for the 2025 season. On Tuesday, the ninth head coaching job just became available after Mike Tomlin stepped down after 19 seasons as the Pittsburgh Steelers’ head coach.

You’ll never forget the last thing that you saw, and that’s Saleh holding the No. 1 seed to 13 points in the regular-season finale and the No. 3 seed to 19 points in their house. At the same time, he was
shorthanded at several positions, not to mention the defensive starter who was lost during the game.
Saleh has been requested for five interviews in Arizona, Atlanta, Baltimore, Miami, and Tennessee. There will be a laundry list of candidates for Pittsburgh’s opening. The more jobs available, the less likely it is that Saleh returns as the 49ers’ defensive coordinator in 2026.
The coaching cycle this season isn’t viewed as strongly as it was last year, when Ben Johnson, Mike Vrabel, and Liam Coen were all available. Saleh’s experience, reputation, and resume should land him a job. It’s probably going to be up to Saleh whether he wants to leave or not.
