By now, you should be more than familiar with our series of regularly updating leaderboards
for various Marquette Golden Eagles sports accomplishments. Keep checking back to that link in the previous sentence for our charts as the seasons continue to churn through history and MU’s various teams continue to create new memories and accomplishments. This time around, we’re going to look at the all-time leaders in assists for Marquette men’s soccer.
1964 was the first year for men’s soccer at Marquette.
1979 was the last time that anyone thought about breaking the career record for assists in program history.
Brian Sayers had a great run from 1972 through 1974, recording 33 career helpers in just 27 matches. Shortly thereafter, Hayden Knight came along and ripped that record away from Sayers. Knight played in 48 matches for Marquette from 1976 through 1979, and he managed 42 assists in that time. That’s the record, and it has stood for well over four decades now.
No one has even recorded 30 assists since Knight’s 42. Jim Tutaj came the closest with 29 from 1982 through 1985. Jose Itarte, who shares the career goals record with Knight, had a pretty good time of things right alongside Tutaj, getting to 26 assists.
No one else in program history has even gotten to 25 assists. The only three players to clear 20 assists in the 21st century are Sean Reti who had 24 when he wrapped up in 2001, Derek Gutierrez and his 21 assists from 2000-03, and Luka Prpa, who tied Gutierrez for the eighth most assists in program history when his career finished in 2019.
It may be a little easier for someone to crack the top 10 here than it is with goals, as it’s possible to register a secondary assist on a soccer goal. The possibility of two guys getting a helper on one goal does give just a little extra chance of recording an assist and thus makes it a little easier to stack up assists. That might be part of the reason why Nico Pendleton and Mateo Stoka led MU in assists in 2025 with four each, and if we’re being honest about it: One more assist each would be the pace you need to get to 20 assists in a four year career and tie Billy Solberg for 10th most in history. You’d have to figure that if Marquette has a more productive offense — just 1.56 goals per match in 2025 — then there’d be more assists and thus chances for guys to build their way towards 20 in a career.
Here’s what the chart looks like at the end of the 2025 season.
