Washington Commanders starting center Nick Allegretti has taken plenty of criticism on social media following the team’s 24-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles. But a closer look at Washington’s offensive performance reveals that their problems went far beyond Allegretti.
Former Washington offensive coordinator Scott Turner joined the latest Trap or Dive Podcastfor a live film session, breaking down Washington’s offensive performance against Philadelphia and identifying what went right, but more importantly,
where things went wrong. Washington struggled to generate explosive plays, but the opportunities were there.
On one play, the Eagles failed to account for receiver Terry McLaurin, creating a potential touchdown opportunity. However, immediate pressure from Jordan Davis disrupted the play before Washington could capitalize. Turner and the Trap or Dive guys break it all down right here, and several other key plays below:
The receivers also contributed to the offense’s early struggles, and may have had difficulty processing Philadelphia’s coverages. In turn, receiver Stefon Diggs and tight end Chig Okonkwo took poor releases that effectively killed a play before it ever got a chance.
Quarterback Jayden Daniels also had moments where he could have helped create more opportunities. Daniels undoubtedly faced a lot of pressure. In fact, it came on 50% of his dropbacks. Still, there were plays where staying in the pocket for another second, even at the risk of taking a hit, could have allowed him to connect with his receivers for potentially explosive gains.
These moments became a major focus of the film session with Turner, as we dissected where Daniels could have trusted the pocket, helped his receivers and given the offense a better chance to make plays.
The good news for Washington is that many of these mistakes can be corrected through film study, communication and mental reps. The bigger question is whether Washington can correct them quickly enough.
One thing is certain: Washington cannot afford another slow start offensively against the Dallas Cowboys in Week 2. Dallas has a high-powered offense capable of putting points on the board, making execution from the start critical if Washington wants to keep pace.
