What is the story about?

Jürgen Klopp was quick to take responsibility after Germany suffered a 1-0 defeat to Greece in his first home match as Germany manager. Rather than pointing to the numerous changes made to the lineup or the difficulties of breaking down a defensive opponent, Klopp emphasized that the decisions were his and that the team needs time to develop.

“The result isn’t great, but it’s part of the process — absolutely. The lineup, the way the team was put together, and all the changes were 100% my responsibility.

That was my idea. It was clear that we weren’t going to completely tear apart a deep-sitting opponent. I could have easily lived with not winning the game by a big margin, but you can’t lose it,” said Klopp (as captured by @iMiaSanMia). “The goal was unlucky, but it fits in a way with the situations they had. They were basically just playing long balls. We defended those first balls reasonably well in most situations, but we weren’t as dominant as we could have been given the physical quality of our players. We’ve only been together for a week, we’re a newly formed team, so we need routines. Football needs training. Everything was great this week, except for large parts of this game.”

Klopp made five changes to his starting lineup from the draw against the Netherlands, with several players receiving opportunities to impress. Germany struggled to create consistently against Greece, while the visitors ultimately found the breakthrough through a deflected Dimitrios Kourbelis strike.

For Klopp, however, the defeat is part of the early process as he looks to establish his ideas and build familiarity within a new-look Germany squad. However, some fans are wondering how this is different than what they saw int he summer and if this can get better.

In time, Klopp will have to answer those questions with the squad’s performances on the pitch.
