Editor’s note: With several sports going on, Wildcat Wrap serves as a recap that focuses on the Arizona programs that we do not have the time to cover on a regular basis but are certainly worthy of recognition.
Arizona golfer Filip Jakubcik is having a big week.
The senior took home the N.I.T., winning the event with rounds of 67, 68 and 67. Jakubcik guided Arizona to a runner-up finish, as the Wildcats finished nine strokes behind Texas. The tournament was at held at Omni Tucson National Resort.
The
individual championship marks Jabubcik’s third win as a Wildcat.
On Wednesday, the Czech Republic native was named to the Ben Hogan Award Watch List. Jakubcik is one of 35 players named to the watch list. The award honors the top collegiate golfer, taking into account results from collegiate, amateur and professional events over the previous 12 months.
Jakubcik currently ranks in the top 30 of collegiate golfers for scoring average.
Arizona is off in the month of February, then returns with the Cabo Collegiate March 1-3.
Men’s tennis
Arizona men’s tennis will face a pair of top 25 opponents on the road this weekend.
The No. 17 Wildcats will take on No. 25 Pepperdine Friday at 4 p.m. MST, then face No. 10 San Diego Sunday at 1 p.m.
Arizona has gotten off to a mixed start to the season, dropping a road match at Oklahoma and a home match to LSU. The loss to LSU was part of ITA Kickoff Weekend and kept Arizona from advancing to ITA Indoor Nationals.
The Wildcats beat Florida State twice last week, the first as a stand-alone match and the second as the consolation match of ITA Kickoff Weekend.
For Arizona to contend for a national seed in the NCAA Tournament, it’ll need to secure a marquee non-conference win or two. This weekend provides such an opportunity.
Swimming and diving
The Arizona diving team heads up to Flagstaff today for the Lumberjack Invite.
The three-day event begins Thursday with the women’s 1-meter and men’s 3-meter, then continues Friday with the women’s 3-meter and men’s 1-meter before wrapping Saturday with the women’s and men’s platform.
Arizona’s men’s and women’s teams both finished second at the recent Big 12 West Championships.
Track and field
Arizona track and field heads to Boston this weekend for the John Thomas Terrier Classic. The two-day event begins Friday and can be streamed on FloTrack.
The Arizona women feature three of the top high jumpers in the nation. Emma Gates ranks second in the NCAA, while Paris Mikinski and Kya Crooke both rank sixth.
Shot putter Tapenisa Havea ranks sixth in the NCAA.
The Arizona women are ranked No. 18 in the nation.
