The 2026 Red Sox season can’t continue as is, right? After a 9-16 start, the team finds itself seven games behind the New York Yankees after a three-game sweep in Boston this week. On Thursday night, Fenway Park felt alive again for the first six innings, as Payton Tolle struck out eleven Yankees and left with a 2-1 lead. Of course, everything went right back to “normal” when the bullpen blew the lead, the bats stayed cold, and the fans left disappointed once again. Same story, different day. At
this point, there’s little reason to think that it won’t be the same story for 162 days if there isn’t a major shake-up on this team.
What constitutes a shake-up? Is it moving on from hitting coach Pete Fatse? They’ve scored two runs or less in 12 of their 25 games this season, including five of the last six games. That probably would be considered a minor move to most.
Should the team make a major trade? Something which so rarely happens in the first half of the season in Major League Baseball, yet did happen a year ago with Rafael Devers.
Would a decision be made to move on from Alex Cora? Craig Breslow?
Nothing should be off the table at this point, a month into the season. 2026 was supposed to be the start of the team’s contention window, and instead looks like the start of a rebuild on the field.
