Just over a week after Senegal’s elimination from the 2026 World Cup via a 3-2 defeat to Belgium, former Bayern Munich and Liverpool winger Sadio Mané announced his retirement from the national team (Le Quotidien as captured by Sport Bild):
Now the time has come to close a chapter. Due to my age and the demands of elite sport, I hereby officially announce my retirement from the national team.” He added: “You should know that I sacrificed everything for this flag. I always gave my best and always fought
passionately for our fatherland. Your tireless support was the driving force behind my success.
In the future, I will gladly put my experience at the service of the nation – whether as a member of a coaching staff, as a coach, or in the governing bodies.
The 34-year-old Senegalese won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2019 and won numerous accolades with Bayern, Liverpool, Red Bull Salzburg, and Al-Nassr where he will continue his career at club level.
