Bayern Munich is running ahead of the competition in the Bundesliga, and it is not particularly close.
“Under normal circumstances, no team will have the quality this season to compete with Bayern’s super squad in the title race,” former Bayern star turned regular pundit Lothar Matthäus said for Sport Bild (captured via @iMiaSanMia).
And he doubled down.
“I’ll go even further: even Bayern’s B team would have serious chances of competing for the title against Dortmund, Stuttgart, Leipzig and Leverkusen,”
Matthäus added. “That alone shows why Bayern are once again the outright favorites for the title this season.”
While Bayern’s depth has been a spot of concern for the Champions League, the same could not be said for the domestic landscape.
Still…is Matthäus right? It is not an entirely sensible question of course because no one set of eleven players plays all of the season. And there is not always a clear delineation between A and B teams: where is Nathaniel Brown or Ismael Saibari right now? But, overall, on paper, the second Bayern XI is extremely solid, from keeper (Jonas Urbig) all the way to the front line (which may need Serge Gnabry at the nine). It would not be without its set of compromises and inexperience, however. The front line is a lot less fearsome with Harry Kane, Michael Olise, and Luis Díaz leading the way…and the midfield would likely need Bara Ndiaye to step up alongside the young Tom Bischof.
It is a fun thought experiment. Just how far would a Bayern second XI go?
