On the eve of their Champions League clash with Liverpool, Real Madrid took time to honor the memory of Diogo Jota and his brother André Jota in a moving tribute outside Anfield. The ceremony brought together
figures from both clubs and highlighted the unity between them in moments of loss.
Representing Real Madrid were manager Xabi Alonso, defender Dean Huijsen, and club legend Emilio Butragueño, who joined Trent Alexander-Arnold, Jota’s former teammate, in laying two bouquets of flowers at the stadium’s main entrance. The floral arrangements symbolized respect and remembrance for the late brothers, who left a lasting mark both on and off the pitch.
The most emotional moment came from Alexander-Arnold, whose tribute to his former teammate was deeply personal. His bouquet of red and white flowers was accompanied by a heartfelt letter that read:
“My friend Diogo. We miss you so much, but we still love you dearly. Your memory and André’s will always live on. I smile every time I think of you, and I will always remember the good times we shared. I miss you, my friend, every single day.”
Alongside the letter, Trent placed a red PlayStation controller at the memorial — a touching nod to Jota’s famous “invisible joystick” goal celebration. On the controller, the England international wrote:
“Forever a champion, I will miss you.”
For Real Madrid, Xabi Alonso — himself a beloved former Liverpool player — led the club’s gesture of respect. The Spanish coach laid a bouquet of white flowers accompanied by a message on behalf of the entire institution:
“Real Madrid expresses its condolences to Liverpool FC and the family of Diogo Jota. The football world mourns the loss of an exceptional player and an incredible person.”
