Boxing manager Sam Jones spent some time talking to iFL TV about a number if topics, including the status of Daniel Dubois and his planned return, before sounding off on a recent Boxing News list of the sport’s most influential figures, where Anthony Joshua just barely cracked the list at #49. Here’s some short excerpts below.
Jones on his plans for Dubois
“Just big fights being worked on for Daniel. There’s a few options and there will be news very soon…Nothing’s concrete but listen, Frank Warren’s got all the heavyweights apart
from maybe a couple. So Daniel is going to involved in great fights but the sole aim is for him to become the world heavyweight champion again.”
On Anthony Joshua’s recent ranking in boxing’s most influential figures
“Anthony Joshua at #48, #49 is an insult, mate. He’s top five, top 10. The least you can put him is top 10. He’s carried British boxing — with Tyson Fury as well, Tyson’s been huge as well — but Anthony Joshua could pack a stadium out now if he wanted to. That’s influence on British boxing, that’s called influence. AJ, you can’t disrespect him like that…The AJ one is baffling.
“You can’t put anyone who’s got the ability to sell a stadium out against [anybody] in anything other than the top 15, top 10. If Canelo’s #5, AJ and Fury are in the top 10.
“Like Turki, undisputed #1 for sure. He has the biggest influence in boxing right now, he’s #1. Eddie (Hearn), Frank Warren, take your pick. George Warren, Frank Smith, Oscar De La Hoya. I mean, you put Al Haymon in there…but Bob Arum, Top Rank, like in reality they don’t have a TV deal at the moment…It is what it is, isn’t it.”
