The San Francisco 49ers will have some difficult decisions to make next Sunday as they attempt to trim their roster to 53. As always, injuries will play a major factor. How many games will Mykel Williams miss? Will there be a new injury by Sunday? Does the team need to keep extra bodies at a position for one reason or another?
Because of
that, the 49ers are likely to skimp at certain positions. Tight end and safety are the obvious ones. But what about quarterback? Kurtis Rourke looked the part in the first preseason game. No position is more valuable than quarterback. Rourke was a seventh-rounder, but that’s because he was going to miss his rookie year.
The 49ers would be fortunate if Rourke made it through waivers. He’s likely Brock Purdy’s backup after the 2026 season. But in the same breath, there would need to be a 2022-type of injury-riddled season for Rourke to play. The Niners’ brass must decide if Rourke’s future is worth a roster spot on a team with depth questions.
It’ll help if multiple players can do multiple jobs. Linebackers, tight ends, running backs, and receivers at the bottom of the depth chart covering kicks will go a long way.
