According to Chandler Rome of The Athletic, the Astros have brought back former pitching coach Brent Strom as a consultant.

Strom had been the person most associated with what has colloquially been called the “Astros Lab” at the start of the Golden

Era. Pitchers frequently improved significantly when joining the Astros and working under Strom.

The “Astros Lab” continued to have success under Strom’s successors, Josh Miller and Bill Murphy, until this season. Prior to this season, Murphy left for a job with the Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Astros have struggled to adapt to changing behaviors of hitters and umpires due to the ABS strike zone.

Astros pitchers are tied for the second most walks in MLB this season with 550, just 1 behind the league-worst Cincinnati Reds. Despite injuries and ineffectiveness plaguing the pitching staff, the Astros are still 10th in MLB in strikeouts with 1161.

The team hopes Strom still has some magic left in him. He will join the team tomorrow in Flushing as the Astros take on the Mets. He will be in uniform.
