The Las Vegas Raiders had a strong day passing the football on Sunday. Geno Smith made his debut in the Silver and Black and threw for 362 yards with a 10.6 YPA. He left his mark on the fan base, helping lead the Raiders to their first win of the year.
Of course, one of the reasons for his success was the play calling and personnel groupings of Chip Kelly. The Raiders deployed two tight ends or 12 personnel 40% of the time vs. the New England Patriots. It led to a bunch of big plays, including the touchdown
to Tre Tucker on the first drive of the game.
Smith was at his best in this personnel, mixing in a use of play action passes to keep the defense off guard. The Raiders’ signal caller dominated from this personnel, picking apart the Patriots’ secondary.
Of course, the health of Brock Bowers is vital for this success to continue. Ian Thomas is a viable tight end in the passing game, but he does not compare to the impact of having Bowers on the field and the attention he gets from defenses. If Bowers is ready to go on Monday Night, expect the Raiders to keep attacking opposing defenses with this personnel.
