Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 9, Memphis Redbirds 1 (Game 1)
The Tides played two on Sunday after Saturday’s schedule game was rained out. Game One was a good one.
Levi Wells won his second start of the season with five one-run, four-hit innings. Wells allowed a run to St. Louis’s Triple-A affiliate on a two-out rally in the first inning. But he allowed just one hit after that in four innings! It was a nice day for the Orioles’ #16 prospect.
As for the hitters, the runs came easy and often against a command-challenged
Braycen Mautz, who walked four and also hit four batters—two in the first inning alone! The Tides made the hit batsmen count, courtesy of a Creed Willems groundout that inning.
In the second, Ryan Noda was also hit, setting up a four-run rally in an inning the Tides would bat around and chase the embattled starter. Following Noda was a Willy Vasquez double, Weston Wilson walk, a Johnathan Rodriguez sac fly, and a walk courtesy of Bryan Ramos.
The Tides weren’t done. They plated two more on a Creed Willems home run in the fourth, and two more in the sixth when Memphis pitched walked five, yes, five, batters in one inning. Sheesh.
Johnathan Rodríguez finished 2-for-3 with a walk. Willems drove in three. Willy Vasquez was 1-for-3 including a walk and a double. Jud Fabian was 1-for-1 with 3 walks. A rehabbing Jackson Holliday went 0-for-5 in the box score.
Triple-A: Memphis Redbirds 7, Norfolk Tides 3 (Game 2)
This one wasn’t as pretty, as the Redbirds scored seven runs in the first five innings off Nestor Germán (#11) and two unfortunate relievers. Germán surrendered five walks and four runs in three innings. José Espada allowed a run in an inning of relief, and Chayce McDermott was even worse, giving up two runs in two thirds of an inning. Enoli Paredes was solid, however, with two K’s in 1.1 innings.
The Tides never led in this one, but their six-hit, five-walk effort wasn’t altogether bad. Bryan Ramos singled and walked. Johnathan Rodríguez kept hitting in the bottom half, with an RBI single in the third. Silas Ardoin was 2-for-2 with an RBI double and a walk. Jud Fabian singled.
