This afternoon, the Colorado Rockies announced that they have claimed RHP Roansy Contreras off waivers from the Baltimore Orioles.

The 25-year-old native of the Dominican Republic signed with the New York Yankees as an international free agent in July. 2016. In January of 2021, he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and in June of that year was selected to play in the Futures Game. Contreras made his MLB debut on September 29, 2021, against the Chicago Cubs.
In 2024, the Pirates moved him to the bullpen.
In 12 outings, Contreras earned a 4.41 ERA, including 16 strikeouts across 161⁄3 innings pitched.
In May of 2024, he was designated for assignment before being traded to the California Angels for cash considerations. In 37 appearances, Contreras earned a 4.33 ERA with 40 strikeouts and two saves in 52 IP.
From August 31, 2024, until today, Contreras has been with a number of teams including the Texas Rangers, Cincinnati Reds, New York Yankees, and Baltimore Orioles.
On February 7, 2025, the Orioles again claimed Contreras before DFAing him again on March 27. After he cleared waivers, he was sent to Triple-A Norfolk. There he made 28 appearances, including 14 starts, for the Tides. He had a 3.83 ERA, concluding 70s Ks and one save while logging 91 2/3 IP.
The Orioles selected Contreras’ contract on August 27, and he faced the Boston Red Sox that night, pitching 4 1/3 scoreless innings.
He was designed for assignment the next day and claimed by the Rockies.
He has no remaining options.
To summarize, in Contreras’ 239 MLB innings pitched, he’s earned a 4.63 ERA, striking out 19.6% while tallying a 10% walk rate.
Given that the Rockies are looking to address a sagging starting rotation in 2026, adding Contreras may be a first step.
According to Baseball Savant, Contreras relies mostly on his four-seamer (31.0%) to set up his changeup (19.7%), curveball (18.3%), sinker, (16.9%), and slider (14.1%).
