Two-time MVP Steph Curry gave Golden State Warriors quite a scare on Sunday. During an open practice — usually a carefree and jovial time — Curry came up lame, and immediately headed to the locker room with a noticeable limp. It was made even scarier by the fact that the injury appeared to be non-contact, and was then accompanied by some ominous tweets from reporters.
Thankfully, when the practice concluded, coach Steve Kerr had good news: it was a tweaked ankle that Curry was dealing with, and not
anything more severe like a knee or Achilles injury.
And then on Monday, even better news came from Kerr: Curry was able to practice today, is still expected to play when the Warriors open up the 2026-27 NBA season on Wednesday against the Los Angeles Lakers.
Dub Nation breathed a collective sigh of relief when Kerr announced that it was an ankle tweak rather than something worse, but the timeline was still unknown. Curry is no stranger to ankle injuries, and sometimes they keep him out for a few minutes while other times they keep him out for a few weeks. The Dubs are already without Jimmy Butler III, Moses Moody, and Kristaps Porziņģis for the foreseeable future, so not losing their best player for the start of the season is, it goes without saying, a very good thing.
We’ll have to wait to see if there are any lingering effects to Curry hurting the ankle so close to the start of the season. He could play fewer minutes than usual on Wednesday in LA, or be less effective. Depending on how his ankle responds to the first game of the season, it wouldn’t be a shock if he gets a rest day a few days later, as the Dubs have a very early back-to-back: on Friday at home (against the Memphis Grizzlies) and on Saturday on the road (against the Phoenix Suns).
