Fresh off a MAC Championship last weekend, Western Michigan head coach will also have a fresh new contract in hand, keeping him in Kalamazoo for the foreseeable future.
Per Tony Paul of the Detroit News,
Taylor’s new contract, which lasts until 2030, will pay at least $1.222 million per year and up resources for both player and staff acquisitions in future seasons. Paul was first to report the news on Monday afternoon.
Taylor was in the third year of his initial five-year contract signed back in 2022 prior to signing the new deal, and had reported interest from several programs over the last week, including from Tulane.
The former Louisville offensive coordinator, who worked under legendary coaches such as Nick Saban, David Shaw and Brian Kelly, went 4-8 in his first season at the helm replacing Tim Lester in 2023, but the team turned around in 2024, winning the first four games of the conference season before fading down the stretch to finish 6-7 with a loss in the Salute to Veterans Bowl against South Alabama.
2025 proved to be a major turning point, as the Broncos won eight of their last nine games after an 0-3 start to put themselves in position for the MAC Championship game, where they took a 23-13 victory over the Miami RedHawks.
In their title run, the Broncos only allowed 14.2 points per game against MAC opponents, while giving up only 284.5 total yards on defense, both good enough for second in the conference behind Toledo, which was a top-ranked defense in the NCAA by every measure. WMU’s fundamentals were also very sound, finishing third in the MAC regular season in red zone defense (32-of-42), second in time-of-possession (33:04) and had the least penalties against them in the MAC (37.4 yards per game).
The Broncos will kick off their title defense campaign on Saturday, September 5th, 2026, against Michigan at the Big House.
