With the Olympics underway, I’m thinking podiums. The trade of the #1 overall pick in 2023 netted Chicago Caleb Williams, Darnell Wright, DJ Moore, and a number of other roster improvements. It was a move that has defined the Chicago Bears under Ryan Poles, and it is the clear choice for the gold medal.
This last offseason, Poles sent a meager 4th-round pick in this upcoming draft to the Kansas City Chiefs in order to acquire left guard Joe Thuney. After arriving in Chicago, Thuney won his fourth
Pro Bowl honor, his third 1st-team All Pro selection, and the inaugural Protector of the Year Award from the NFL. This has to be the silver medal.
But which trade made by Ryan Poles takes the last spot on the podium? What trade earns the bronze medal?
Is it the Montez Sweat trade, which is still paying dividends for Chicago, albeit with its own price tag attached? Is it sending a 4th-rounder to Los Angeles to “rent” Keenan Allen for the rookie season of Caleb Williams? How about the 6th-rounder sent for Jonah Jackson?
I’m partial to the shuffle made in 2023 after successfully trading the #1 overall pick to the Carolina Panthers. Many fans hopes Poles would find a way to pull a “double”, and he did. Shuffling down one spot with Philadelphia, he allowed them to take a player he never wanted and essentially got a “free” fourth-round pick while still taking Darnell Wright, the elite tackle Chicago was targeting all along.
That’s my choice, but now it’s your turn. What’s the third-best trade Ryan Poles has made during his time in Chicago?
