In a battle of two surging 145-pound contenders looking to crack the Top 10, Garcia and Onama will battle in a pivotal affair to see who takes a step forward and who has his momentum and hard work halted. Garcia is currently on a six-fight win streak and is ranked No. 12 in the division. He is coming off a win over long-time veteran, Calvin Kattar, this past summer giving him his longest win streak of his career. Now, he is out to move to seven straight victories against another streaking fighter looking to take over his spot.
Onama, meanwhile, is ranked No. 13 and is currently on a four-fight win streak. He is coming off a big win over Giga Chikadze, bringing his overall record to 6-2 inside the Octagon. That was without a doubt the biggest win of his young UFC career, but a victory over Garcia will be the one that will likely catapult him into the Top 10. I like this fight because it will be a sure-fire slugfest, as 14 of Garcia’s 18 wins have come by way of knockout, while Onama has stopped seven of his past opponents via strikes. I give the edge to Garcia in the standup department, but I wouldn’t put it past Onama to get a good enough lick in to get the job done. In the end, I feel fight fans will be satisfied with the output from both men in a bout that is sure to deliver on all fronts.
What’s Not:
Ketlen Vieira vs. Norma Dumont will collide in a women’s Bantamweight fight on the undercard. The fight makes sense, standings wise, as Vieira is ranked No. 3 and Dumont sits at No. 4. That said, Dumont is currently on a five-fight win streak and is 8-2 overall inside the Octagon, while Vieira has been rather inconsistent and has not had back-to-back wins in four years. That tells me that the rankings system (and voters) is a bit off because Vieira probably shouldn’t be in the Top 5 with that kind of run.
Original Card Vs. Actual Card/Injuries
A Middleweight fight between Nick Klein and Octagon newcomer, Donte Johnson, was scheduled for this event before Klein withdrew from the fight for unknown reasons and was ultimately replaced by Sedriques Dumas. Also, a Bantamweight bout between Miles Johns vs. Muin Gafurov was set to go down here before Gafurov withdrew for undisclosed reasons. Johns will now face Daniel Marcos next weekend. In addition, a Flyweight bout between Rafael Estevam vs. Allan Nascimento was scheduled for this event before Estevam withdrew for undisclosed reasons and was replaced by Cody Durden, who is on a two-fight losing streak and has lost four of five overall. As for Nascimento, he is on a three-fight win streak, which began after he lost his UFC debut at the hands of Tagir Ulanbekov.
New Blood:
Johnson will make his UFC debut on short notice as he gets set to battle Dumas, who is 3-3-1 inside the Octagon. Johnson, meanwhile, is undefeated (6-0). But, what makes his young career most impressive so far is the fact that he has finished all six of his opponents via first round knockout in the span of just 15 months. Now, he will attempt to carry that same momentum with him on the big stage. If he can keep doing that same work inside the Octagon, he will put everyone on notice right away.
Kevin Christian is another UFC newcomer looking to make a splash straight away as he goes up against Billy Elekana. Christian earned his spot on UFC’s roster following an impressive outing on Contender Series, submitting Francesco Mazzeo via arm-triangle almost one year ago. He is currently on a six-fight win streak, while Elekana is coming off a unanimous decision win over Ibo Aslan.
How The ‘Prelims’ Look:
We’ve already looked at some of the action on the “Prelims,” so let’s dive in to see the other three fights going down on the undercard, shall we?
In men’s Featherweight action, Timmy Cuamba will face Chang Ho Lee. Cuamba secured his first win inside the Octagon after losing his first two, knocking out Roberto Romero earlier this year. As for Lee, he is on a five-fight win streak, which includes winning his first three fights inside the Octagon.
Kicking off the card will be a women’s Strawweight bout between Talita Alencar and Ariane Carnelossi. Alencar is 2-1-1 so far in her young UFC career, while Carnelossi 3-2 with three stoppages to her credit. Both women have a ton of work to do if they ever want to start getting the big fights, but a win for either one of them here is a huge step in the right direction.
In a men’s Welterweight affair, Phil Rowe will face off against South Korea’s Seok Hyeon Ko, who is on a five-fight win streak and is coming off a successful debut win over Oban Elliott earlier this year. As for Rowe, he snapped his two-fight skid by defeating Ange Loosa earlier this year.
Who Needs A Win Badly:
Montserrat Rendon has seen batter days, as the Mexican-born fighter has now lost her last three fights after winning her debut fight in 2021. She hasn’t been overly active, and when you couple her skid along with her inconsistency to fight, she is a prime candidate to get cut if she loses her fourth straight at the hands of Alice Ardelean, who secured the first win of her UFC career over Rayanne dos Santos earlier this year after starting off 0-2.
Interest Level: 5/10
In the co-main event of the evening, former Professional Fighters League (PFL) Heavyweight tournament winner, Ante Delija, returns for his second fight inside the Octagon to square off against Waldo Cortes-Acosta. Delija made an impressive splash in his promotional debut by knocking out Marcin Tybura in the first round just last month in France (see it again here). He is right back at it again in a lightning-quick turnaround to keep his momentum going as he takes on Cortes-Acosta, who had his five-fight win streak snapped by Sergei Pavlovich just two months ago. For Delija, taking out a UFC veteran like “Salsa Boy” gets him closer to a Top 5 spot, as he currently sits at No. 10 with just one win inside the Octagon.
Themba Gorimbo is not having a good week. A few days ago, reports surfaced that he never fulfilled his promise to build water wells in his village in Zimbambwe, with many accusing him of pocketing the money he raised via donations. Nevertheless, that’s all speculation, and at the moment, he has a big fight ahead of him in the form of Jeremiah Wells, who has lost two straight and is hungry for a win. Gorimbo also needs a win because he was last seen losing to Vicente Luque, so both men will come out motivated to get back on track.
In Featherweight action, Isaac Dulgarian vs. Yadier del Valle square off to see who takes a nice step forward in the crowded division. Dulgarian hasn’t seen the inside the Octagon in more than one year as he was last seen submitting Brendon Marotte. Overall, he is 7-1 with all of his wins coming by way of stoppage. As for del Valle, he looks to improve to 10-0 and wants to build off his successful UFC debut in which he submitted Connor Matthews in the first round earlier this year (recap).
Charles Radtke vs. Daniel Frunza throw down in a main card Welterweight bout. Radtke will look to earn himself a trip back to the winner’s circle after suffering knockout loss at the hands of Mike Malott earlier this year (see it here). As for Frunza, he is on the hunt for his first win inside the Octagon after coming up short against Rhys McKee in his UFC debut six months ago.
It’s not the best card; in fact, it’s downright below average. But, as we have seen in the past, events that aren’t as stacked with big names sometimes have a tendency to surprise us and deliver when least expected.
Enjoy the fights!
