Welcome to the FC Bayern Campus Round Up, where the matches of Bayern Munich’s U-23, U-19 and U-17 squads are recapped, lineups are provided and the highlights to the matches are hyperlinked on top of their respective score line. Due to the September international break, only the U-23s played this weekend while rhe U-19s and U-17s shared a friendly. Remember, highlights for each match can be watched for free once you create an account on Bayern’s website.
Information on the matches of the U-23s is
provided by the official FC Bayern website here. The results of the U-15, U-16, U-17 and U-19s can be found here. If you wish to learn more about the format of the U-17 and U-19’s youth leagues and what is at stake, you can find more info here. Without further ado, here is the round up:

Still shorn of the players called up for international duty, U-23s head coach Dante was forced to experiment again. The dubiously successful experiment of putting Noah Codjo-Evora on the left wing continued, Guido Della Rovere was moved from the right flank to the center, Bastian Assomo dropped to the bench and Arthurd Degraf started on the right instead. It did help to have a winger in the team, but Degraf hardly convinced to the point that the Bavarians couldn’t have done without him. Meanwhile, Kevin Wimmer was brought back from the cold to provide CB cover and U-19 RB/CB Ryan Moumouni started as the squad was shorn of its center backs.
More importantly, Chivano Wijks was finally listed as fit by the match preview. The Dutch full-back has endured an injury plagued 12 months and was supposed to finally make his return, only to be left off the team entirely. It turns out he played in the U-19’s friendly this weekend and successfully managed his return from injury.
On to the match, things could hardly have started worse as the Bavarians conceded the opener 2 minutes in. The team did not concentrate, were slower in mind and body than the opponents and were duly punished. From Noah Codjo-Evora’s bizarre marking (it was clear he had no idea how to position himself defensively as a left winger) to Allen Junior Lambe’s lackadaisical effort to block the cross and the way right back Vincent Manuba completely ignored his responsibility to defend his man, it was a poor team effort.
Asked to dictate and create chances against a low block now that the opponents had the lead, Bayern struggled. They managed some half chances from set pieces and Anton Heinz had a decent effort, but the big chance came from individual brilliance from Lambe. The midfielder picked the ball up, was given time and space and picked out streaking forward Codjo-Evora with an unbelievable pass with his weak foot. The striker did so well to nod it past the keeper, but did not expect the intervention from the defender, who was able to prevent the ball from crossing the goal line.
The first half saw Bayern dominate the ball and create very little. The second half was much more back and forth. The Bavarians created some more chances (Assomo really should have scored with a volley) but lost defensive leader David Heindl to injury in the second half, forcing Dante to bring Wimmer on. Unfortunately, there is a reason the 21-year-old has not seen game time before this season and he was unsure throughout. This defensive instability, combined with the ragged nature of the match, saw Greuther Fürth create multiple chances to go ahead. As the clock ticked down towards 90, it seemed Bayern would be consigned to yet another loss this season.
But, as has so often happened this season, individual brilliance saved the day. Yll Gashi, who enjoyed a strong start to the season in midfield and was then limited to minutes at the end of the match, showed pace and power to barge past his opponent on the sideline, drove into the center and then picked out a beautiful pass to Codjo-Evora, who had been struggling due to cramps for a while. The French forward ignored those issues, though, and took advantage of the goalkeeper’s hesitancy to rip a first time shot into the back of the net. 83 minutes after going down 1-0, Bayern had found their equalizer.
There would not be a winner. Bayern and Greuther Fürth both had chances at the death, but in the end it was a deserved draw. Bayern consolidate their place in the middle of the table and will hopefully welcome back their international players in time for the derby against SpVgg Unterhaching on Friday, October 9.
Other results:
Bayern U-19s+U-17s 1-2 SSV Ulm U-19s
Bayern U-16s 1-1 SpVgg Unterhaching U-16s (Bayern received a red card in the 5th minute and another around the hour mark)
Greuther Fürth U-15s 2-0 Bayern U-15s
