FC Magdeburg might have suffered a 6–1 defeat against Bayern Munich in the DFB-Pokal, but the visitors left with their heads held high after giving the German giants a genuine challenge in the first half.
For striker Barış Artik, the missed opportunity to equalize before the break proved particularly costly. Nevertheless, he was proud of the way Magdeburg approached the occasion, refusing to abandon their footballing identity despite facing one of Europe’s most formidable teams.
“I think scoring the
equalizer before halftime would have been extremely helpful. Unfortunately, we were unlucky. Nevertheless, we played some good football and didn’t hide. We played out from the back and wanted to show the fans here in such a stadium that we have Magdeburg DNA. Our fans are insane. Anyone who travels here with 13,000 fans for a Wednesday match at 8:45 PM deserves respect, and I’m proud to play for such a club,” Artik said (as captured by FCBayern.com).
Defender Alexander Nollenberger, meanwhile, acknowledged just how difficult Bayern are to contain once they find their rhythm.
“What a machine! We kept it exciting until halftime. At 2-1, we were still within striking distance. But then the penalty and the 3-1 made it all over. They just don’t stop, they never stop. You can defend everything, but we knew how difficult it would be today, and yet it was still fun, even if the final result wasn’t exciting. But that can happen against Bayern,” Nollenberger remarked.
Magdeburg had their moments, but Bayern Munich’s relentless attacking quality ultimately proved too much. Six goals later, the Bavarians marched into the Round of 16, leaving their opponents with plenty of respect for the level they had just faced.
