When players and agents sue the NCAA, they tend to win, and Mitchell might be the latest winner.
With the news of a preliminary injunction granting any four year player a 5th season spread everywhere quickly, and Mark Mitchell was and is one of the best names available. Mitchell isn’t technically in the transfer portal, so technically he can’t transfer anywhere. It was announced he intends to enter the transfer portal… but I guess he needs some more legal injunctions to open the portal first.
There’s one team who seem to think they’re getting Mitchell, and it’s a team in need of some interior
help:
The rumors are out there that Kentucky is hot on Mitchell, as well as former Michigan State big Jaxon Kohler. They did talk with former Auburn-UCF-George Mason-UNLV wing Keyshawn Hall but both have gone their separate ways.
Kentucky has Zoom Diallo, Milan Momcilovic, Malachi Moreno, Alex Wilkins, and three open spots. But I wouldn’t count out Missouri. Mizzou doesn’t have an open spot at the moment, but there are certainly creative ways they can get around that problem. The Tigers were also apparently pretty tapped out financially at the end of the portal, but being able to add someone like Mitchell would very likely shake loose the needed money to keep in Black and Gold.
I have no idea what tomorrow will bring, and what court rulings will come down. The NCAA seems likely to fight some of these rulings, and Mark technically signed a professional deal when he went to play in the NBA Summer League. There are still a lot of hoops to jump through for Mr. Mitchell, but when players and agents have sued the NCAA, they’ve generally won. It’s still very much worth monitoring.
Yesterday at Rock M and Rock M+
We’re close enough to the College Football season starting up that Nathan Hurst has wrapped up his top opposing players series with an ornery undersized thrower from Athens, Gunner Stockton:
His scrambling ability remains one of the most difficult aspects of his game to defend. Stockton has an instinctive feel for escaping pressure without abandoning the play, allowing receivers extra time to uncover while also creating rushing opportunities when defenses turn their backs in coverage.
Surrounded by another talented roster, Stockton enters the season with legitimate championship expectations and an opportunity to cement himself among the SEC’s top quarterbacks.
He also previewed OU DL Taylor Wein who wreaked havoc on the Tigers OL last fall.
- New Mizzou FB beat writer (but experienced RMN writer) Colin Simmons took a look at FCS transfer Xai’Shaun Edwards and how he might impact the running back room:
FCS transfer Xai’Shaun Edwards came to the Tigers this offseason knowing he’d at least start as RB3 on the depth chart. He has three seasons of eligibility remaining, and with the tragic injury to Hardy, he has an opportunity to stake his claim for touches.
Roberts mentioned a fierce competition in the running back room through the spring and summer at fall camp media day. He’s the leader of the pack for the time being, but he’s noticed Edwards’ potential.
“He’s gonna run the ball this season. He’s definitely a good ball runner,” Roberts said. “He’s got a lot of good football knowledge, and he’s gonna be a good addition for our backfield.”
I like Mizzou’s approach of just finding the best smaller school running back they can and tossing him into the zone read system. Drinkwitz has turned Larry Johnson, Tyler Badie, Cody Schrader, and now Ahmad Hardy into elite college backs. Even Nate Noel and Marcus Carroll combined to rush for 1,400 yards.
