Javier Assad, RHP vs. McCade Brown, RHP

Javier Assad has really had an up-and-down year. First he missed most of the year with an oblique injury, then was activated and made three starts. The most recent
one, eight days ago vs. the Angels, was pretty good (six innings, three hits, one run).
He was optioned to Triple-A Iowa after that, but from various reports never made it to Des Moines, instead hanging out with the Cubs in Chicago. Then he was recalled when Jameson Taillon hit the IL again.
So he’s got plenty of rest. Last year he threw six shutout innings vs. the Rockies at Wrigley April 2, 2024, but then allowed four runs in six innings to the Rox at Coors Field Sept. 13, 2024.
The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.
McCade Brown is a downstate Illinois native (Normal) who pitched his college ball at Indiana. He was the Rockies’ third-round pick in 2021 and had one year in their system before having Tommy John surgery in 2023. He started this year in A ball and got called up after 11 starts in Double-A.
Perhaps predictably, given that he had never pitched above Double-A, he got hit hard in his MLB debut Aug. 24 vs. the Pirates — five hits, four runs in 3.2 innings. This will be his first start at Coors Field. He’s never faced the Cubs or anyone on their active roster.
