For years, Bayern Munich has been able to avoid seriously thinking about life after Manuel Neuer because, even at an advanced age for a goalkeeper, he continued to produce world-class moments. But performances like the one Jonas Urbig delivered against VfL Wolfsburg are beginning to make the conversation feel very real.
Urbig looked calm, confident, and — maybe most importantly — unfazed by the pressure of wearing the Bayern Munich badge. His shot-stopping stood out immediately, but it was the composure
in possession and command of the box that probably caught the attention of supporters most. Bayern Munich’s system asks its goalkeeper to do far more than simply make saves, and Urbig looked comfortable playing high off his line and helping build from the back.
Of course, Neuer is still one of the sport’s defining goalkeepers and remains the standard Bayern Munich expects at the position. Replacing a legend is not just about talent; it is about consistency, leadership, communication, and handling enormous expectations every single week.
Still, Bayern Munich fans have been waiting for signs that the club may already have its long-term answer in the building, and Urbig gave them plenty to think about. Young goalkeepers often show flashes, but what made this performance notable was how complete it felt. He did not look like a prospect trying to survive the occasion — he looked like a player who belonged there.
The biggest question now is whether Bayern Munich would truly trust him with the No. 1 role whenever Neuer eventually steps aside, or whether the club would still pursue a proven veteran option to bridge the gap. Bayern Munich historically does not gamble at goalkeeper, especially when Champions League ambitions are involved.
But after Wolfsburg, it feels fair to ask whether Urbig may be further along than many expected.
What do you think? For those who might not be fully onboard with Urbig yet, did he show enough to make you believe he can eventually replace Neuer?
