In the span of two months, former Seattle Seahawks star quarterback Russell Wilson has gone from QB1 to QB3 for the lowly New York Giants.
A concussion for promising rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart means
that the New York Giants need to turn to a backup. Wilson, who was the Week 1 starter for the Giants before ceding his spot to Dart, has been the QB2 behind Dart. Now he’s behind Jameis Winston, who hasn’t played a snap all season but is slated to be the starter on Sunday against the Green Bay Packers.
Wilson’s Giants tenure has been a horror show outside of a vintage game versus the Dallas Cowboys, whose defense has been wildly inept this season. In a limited sample size, he’s posted career lows in completion percentage, success rate, QBR, and passer rating. He’s been heavily booed in his last handful of snaps at MetLife Stadium, and even though Brian Daboll is fired, it looks like interim coach Mike Kafka doesn’t want any part of the late career Russ experience.
At 37 years old and with severely diminished abilities that have made him a shadow of his once excellent self, it’s fair to wonder if this is how Russ’ career ends. He’s not really a starting caliber QB at this stage and now one of the worst teams in the league doesn’t even view him as the top backup option anymore. His limited backup snaps, particularly against the Chicago Bears, were a painful watch.
I await the one-day contract for Russ to retire as a Seahawk. Perhaps that’s coming as soon as 2026, because the league will be the ultimate determinant as far as his desire to play well into his 40s.
