Preseason is over, the regular season is closing in, and now the Atlanta Falcons have the unenviable task of cutting dozens of players. When it’s all over, a 90 man roster will be a 53 man roster, and then the Falcons will set about building a 16 (or 17, if Lenny Krieg is cut and clears waivers) man practice squad.
It’s a tough time for those getting cut, as I like to remember each year, because for some their NFL dreams are effectively over. Others will have to work very hard to latch on elsewhere,
while still others won’t have trouble finding a new home, but will have to pack up their life and head somewhere else. Think of those players as the news about cuts roll in.
For those borderline players and rookies who do make the roster—or a practice squad spot a little later—it’s a time for celebration. For fans, it’s a time for that too, as well as a time to obsessively break down the structure of the roster until we actually see it in action. Naturally, we’ll have you covered there.
The Falcons need to make their cuts by Tuesday afternoon, and last year, they made an initial wave of cuts on Sunday following their final preseason game and announced the rest Tuesday shortly before the deadline. We can probably expect a similar timeline this week, so keep an eye here over the weekend and early next week as we round up any and all reported cuts.
