Quentin Lake spoke during an interview on The Arena: Gridiron where he broke down watching Puka Nacua in the Los Angeles Rams locker room as they prepared to take on the Seattle Seahawks in Week 16 of the 2025 season. Lake expressed that there was a look in Nacua’s eyes that told the defensive back that whatever was going on off the field, Nacua was ready to show up on it.
Show up for the game Nacua did. Though the Rams lost that contest, with Nacua racking up 200+ receiving yards and two touchdowns,
it’s hard to blame receiver for the loss.
Heading into that game, Nacua was seen making an offensive gesture during an online stream, a gesture and incident Nacua he did apologize for, but a mistake nonetheless. On top of that mistake, Nacua also reportedly tried getting some of his streamer “friends” into the L.A. Rams facility without permission from Sean McVay. Another mistake. Both in the same week leading up to the pivotal Week 16 matchup against the Seahawks.
It’s not a stretch to say those behaviors can rub your teammates the wrong way, or that having those types of situations off the field will effect you come gameday. However, as Lake recalls, the controversy really didn’t hurt Nacua in terms of his performance as Nacua went on to have perhaps his strongest game with the Rams.
“He has that mentality that you need to be a dog at receiver, he got that. Thursday night when we unfortunately lost against the Seahawks. Puka was going through some things with like streamers and all that. I was hurt at the time. Sitting there I was like ‘You know what? It’d be crazy if he went for like 250. I was sitting there and I got chills…he wasn’t talking to nobody; he was standing up…he was about to go off.”
It certainly appears to all who watch football that Nacua has the on-field part of the business down. However, the off-field part, Nacua still seems to be learning how to navigate all the press and attention that he now receives as one of the best receivers in the NFL.
No, Nacua doesn’t need to be perfect, but if he can avoid negative headlines, while still producing on the field, he very well should be in for a massive payday when the time comes. Whether that’s with the Rams or someone else.
Of course, if Nacua keeps putting up 200+ yard games with L.A., it sure seems like the Rams would want to be at the front of the line to pay the number one wideout. From the sound of Lake, his teammates would be happy to see him figure it all out, and stick around.
