Newcastle United have confirmed their 21-man squad for the Champions League group stage after the closure of the summer transfer window.
UEFA rules limited Eddie Howe’s options. Clubs without four club-trained players cannot submit the full quota of 25, leaving Newcastle restricted to 21 names.
With Sean Longstaff and Elliot Anderson sold this and last summer, the only club-trained option, Lewis Miley, was named on List B and therefore did not occupy a List A place.
That meant four senior players missed
out. Jamaal Lascelles, who captained Newcastle during their 2023/24 campaign, was the most notable omission. Goalkeepers John Ruddy and Mark Gillespie, along with full-back Harrison Ashby, were also cut.
Summer signings Nick Woltemade and Yoane Wissa are included after their high-profile arrivals, while Jacob Ramsey, Anthony Elanga, Malick Thiaw and Aaron Ramsdale also take their places. Howe now has two new strikers available following Alexander Isak’s record sale to Liverpool.
Newcastle will open their campaign against Barcelona at St James’ Park on September 18, before travelling to Union Saint-Gilloise. The Magpies then face Benfica, Athletic Club, Marseille, Bayer Leverkusen, PSV Eindhoven and Paris Saint-Germain.
