Per release, Michigan freshman Brandon McCoy will miss the 2026-27 season with a torn ACL.
McCoy went down just 20 seconds into the Wolverines’ exhibition game against Mega Superbet (Belgrade, Serbia) and had to be carried off of the court. This is a major blow to Michigan, and one that could potentially get them back into the transfer market
for a fifth-year player. The 6’5” freshman was ranked 11th in the country by 247Sports.
The McCoy injury adds on to an already long list of injuries for Michigan, as Cincinnati transfer Moustapha Thiam is recovering from a leg injury he sustained in Lithuania and LSU transfer Jalen Reed is recovering from his Achilles injury that he suffered last year. L.J. Cason, who was also recovering from injury, decided to transfer to Miami after former head coach Dusty May took the Dallas Mavericks’ job.
While Michigan is still the defending champion and has a lot of talent, the loss of McCoy will inevitably lower its ceiling for the coming year. Villanova is set to face off against the Wolverines on Saturday, Nov. 21 at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Prior to this news, Michigan was the biggest opportunity for a marquee win on the resume. That is still likely the case, but the gap has closed between them and Kansas. Especially considering the other potential injuries early on in the season, new head coach Mike Boynton Jr. could have a limited roster when he makes his way to Philadelphia.
