And just like that, we’re back. 93 days after being crowned Premier League champions, Arsenal take the pitch on Friday to begin their title defense as they welcome newly-promoted Coventry City to the Emirates for the first match of the 2026/27 Premier League season.
Mikel Arteta’s side enter the season ready to maintain their perch at the top. Two cup finals and a title last season following a massive summer window furthered the conviction in Arteta’s project and cemented Arsenal as an inevitable
force to be reckoned with in world football once again. Raising the PL trophy was cathartic for fans and players alike. More importantly, it was a deserved accolade following Arteta’s methodical rebuild of the club. Decades of the pain and ignominy of being nearly-men were erased as they claimed their rightful crown as kings of England in the former player’s 6th season at the helm.
A new season approaches, and with it, a chance for the Gunners to capitalize on their successes and prove that last season was no fluke. While a majority of their rivals have spent the summer replacing managers and overhauling their rosters, the core of Arsenal’s title winning squad returns with a few new additions brought in to propel them to further heights. In a sea of change, Arsenal remain the constant with the league’s longest tenured manager, an experienced and deep squad, and the sort of self belief that can only come from finally reaching the top of the mountain.
After a summer of basking in the title, it all starts again on Friday. With expectations raised to astronomical heights and another 10 month gauntlet in front of them, can the Gunners stay hungry and focused as they eye a second consecutive title?
Here are three talking points ahead of Friday’s match:
Know the Enemy
Coventry return to the Premier League for the first time in 25 years after finishing atop the Championship last season under former Chelsea legend Frank Lampard.
It’s been a long road back to the top flight for the Sky Blues. After their relegation in 2001, they bounced between divisions, falling as far as League 2 in the 2018-19 season before fighting back into the Championship in the 2019/20 season.
They have been knocking on the door to the PL for the past several seasons. They narrowly missed promotion to the Premier League after losing the playoff final to Luton Town in the 22/23 season, with eventual Arsenal striker Viktor Gyökeres lead the club with 22 goals. The following season saw them make an appearance in the FA Cup semifinal where they lost in penalties to eventual champions Manchester United. Finally, under Lampard, who took charge in 2024, they punched their ticket back to the PL last season with a dominant campaign.
Championship success is rarely an indicator of how that will translate to the PL, but Coventry may fancy their chances after seeing Sunderland and Leeds’ successes last season. Their title winning season saw them storm out of the gates and never look back with a dominant attack leading their charge. Lampard’s familiarity with the PL will also be a major boost to their confidence.
The question for them is the same that every promoted team has to face: will the talent gap be too wide? More often than not, they lose their steam as their thinner rosters and less prolific squads simply cannot keep up with the rest of the league. They’ve had a busy summer, signing 8 players so far. Still, only two incomings have PL experience, while the rest have arrived from outside of the league. Will that be enough to be the difference between survival and relegation?
They enter Friday’s opener missing one player in Haji Wright, who suffered a quad injury ahead of the match. As last season’s leading scorer, his absence will be a blow to their attack.
Injuries & Suspensions
Arsenal begin the season without two of their biggest defensive cogs as William Saliba is sidelined until December with a back injury, while Jurrien Timber continues to recover from his nagging groin injury that looks to have him out until September.
OUT: William Saliba (back), Jurrien Timber (groin)
DOUBT: N/A
Predicted Lineup
Attack: Tzolis, Havertz, Saka
The preseason saw the Gunners without a core of key players following the World Cup, including the electric Bukayo Saka. Last season saw him struggle with a chronic Achilles injury, but he bounced back during the World Cup with some vintage performances. His came on as a sub against Manchester City in the Community Shield, which likely means he gets the start barring any auxiliary fitness concerns or enforced rest.
New signing Christos Tzolis made a splash in the preseason with six goal contributions in six matches. Does that mean anything substantial? No, not really. But he absolutely looks like he will slot in excellently on the left and provide a lot of high-quality chances for the attack. Filling the boots of Leandro Trossard won’t be easy, but he looks poised to rise to the challenge.
Kai Havertz and Viktor Gyökeres will split time up top, but it’s no secret that Kai is Mikel’s preferred option. His technical level and understanding of Arteta’s system give him a major advantage, and his penchant for showing up in big games is unmatched among the strikers. Perhaps Vik is eager to start against his former club, but Kai is the guy.
Midfield: Guimarães, Rice, Ødegaard
Bruno Guimarães’ signing adds significant prowess and experience to the midfield. More importantly, it gives Arteta the tools to rotate in the midfield without a dip in quality (and just a little more dark arts).
Declan Rice made his return on Sunday. Despite playing an eye-watering amount of minutes last season, he looks poised to return to the midfield already. Starting him deeper should save his legs some, in theory. He’d probably still find a way to run all match if he was put in goal. Myles Lewis-Skelly looks ready to stamp his name in the midfield rotation if Rice is unavailable.
The captain is the player who seems most eager to reestablish himself. His performances during the World Cup and Community Shield were reminders of the Martin Ødegaard of old, who glided through the midfield and picked passes with precision. I expect it to be a huge season for him.
Defense: Calafiori, Gabriel, Hincapie, White
Arsenal’s defense set a high bar last season. Meeting it will be tough, but as the entire defense returns (with a key addition), they have a strong shot at setting the tone once again.
Italy missing out on the WC means Riccardo Calafiori comes back with fresh legs. His fitness remains the biggest issue, but when he’s fit and confident, he gives opposing offenses and defenses fits and gives Arsenal a maverick edge across the pitch.
Gabriel will be without his partner William Saliba for a few months, which means it will be time for either Cristhian Mosquera or incoming Ezri Konsa to step up. Considering Konsa signed on Thursday, it’s unlikely he starts, meaning Mosquera takes the RCB spot. After an impressive debut season, the Spanish international can continue to show his growth in the defense.
Ben White ended last season with another knee injury but has returned in time to take up the right in Jurrien Timber’s continued absence. The Arsenal veteran has been a pivotal cog in the defense despite his perpetual maladies. Benny Blanco just doesn’t quit.
Keeper: Raya
After David Raya won his third consecutive Golden Glove, the league’s best shot-stopper returns to vie for an unprecedented 4th in a row.
How do you follow up a title winning campaign? By going again. The past season ended three months ago, and the Gunners are back at the starting blocks, ready to begin another marathon. This time, they start it knowing what it takes to finish the race at the front of the pack. The target on their back is bigger than ever, but the players’ desire to retain the title should be even bigger.
The season’s gonna be bumpy. It’s gonna be tiring. But I have a feeling that by the time it’s all done and dusted, it’s gonna be a whole lot of fun.
