Bayern Munich made it 11 wins from as many matches with their 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund at the Allianz Arena thanks to goals from Harry Kane and Michael Olise. Julian Brandt’s goal in the 84th minute shortly after being introduced into the match by Niko Kovac proved to be nothing more than a consolation as Vincent Kompany’s side did enough to prevent Dortmund from clawing back a second.
Bayern were far better in the first half compared to the second half, but still did enough to get over the line
in the end. They finished the match with a total of seven shots of target, the majority of which came in the first half and keeper Gregor Kobel was kept plenty busy. One of the negative takeaways from a Bayern perspective is that they perhaps should have gone into the halftime interval up by more than just one goal for all the dominance they showed and chances they created.
Speaking after the match, Joshua Kimmich, who assisted Kane’s headed goal from his corner kick, explained that he’s pleased Bayern was able to win the way they did, knowing full well that there was a bit of a dip in the second half. Dortmund certainly could have made Bayern pay more than they did for taking their foot off the gas.
“It was an important win, including the way we played. The first half was very good. In the second half Dortmund did better, they had a couple of good chances — one of them with Karim [Adeyemi] after my mistake. They scored a nice goal. We weren’t at our best level in the second half. But we fought, and it was a very important win for the team. You can see that it’s difficult to beat us at the moment,” Kimmich stressed (as captured via @iMiaSanMia).
While Bayern has not lost a match yet, they have developed a habit of allowing teams back into matches with second half goals, which is something Kompany will certainly address. Kovac knew ahead of Der Klassiker where there were going to be periods where his side would park the bus, but Bayern still did well to remain dangerous in attack, even in the second half when Dortmund made significant improvements upon their first half.
