Serge Gnabry’s Bayern Munich season is over. The 30-year-old German international’s comeback campaign has been revelatory, shifting central to accommodate Jamal Musiala’s absence in the first half of the year and injecting a ferocious directness to Vincent Kompany’s record-setting attack.
Now, Gnabry is out and he won’t even be available as a change-up option for the business end of the campaign.
“Of course it’s a pity that Serge won’t be here now because he’s done so well for us this season,” Kompany
said in comments captured by @iMiaSanMia. “I feel that Jamal has been freer since after the international break — I don’t want to put all the pressure on Jamal, that wouldn’t be fair. But if he keeps going this way, we know what we can expect from him.”
It has been a season full of eased expectations for Jamal Musiala so far — only natural, coming off the horrendous injury he sustained at last summer’s Club World Cup. Now, though, Bayern is in a Champions League semifinal and Musiala’s replacements are out. Even with a Bundesliga title secured, the room for taking it slow is fast disappearing.
Fortunately for the Bavarians, Musiala, after a recent injury setback scare, is starting to find his feet again. Just in time.
