Bayern Munich takes on Hamburg on the road in the quarterfinals of the DFB-Pokal Frauen.
It is a rematch of one of the final matches before the December break. Back then, Bayern smashed the ‘burgers in a totally dominant 6-0 Bundesliga victory. But don’t expect an automatic repeat.
For one thing, cup magic is in the air.
“We expect a tough cup match,” Bayern coach José Barcala stated in his match preview (as captured by FCBayern.com). “These clashes have their own laws. There’s no room for error, the atmosphere
at the Volksparkstadion will be electric. The crowd will support their team all the way. We’re up against very well-organized opponents, in a compact block with high pressing at times. We’ll be best prepared for that.”
“I expect a totally different game to the Bundesliga meeting,” concurred Bayern defender Magdalena Eriksson. “In the cup, in front of this crowd, Hamburg will give everything, probably sit deep and wait for their moments. That’s going to be a real test for us.
“We’ve only had two days to prepare, which makes it all the important that we quickly get together and bring our best performance. It’s on us to get the job done and get a step closer to our target of Cologne.”
Team News: Bayern’s missing…a lot. Even more than usual.
Sarah Zadrazil, Lena Oberdorf, Alara Şehitler, Klara Bühl, and Katharina Naschenweng are all out with various injuries — the first two long-term. Momoko Tanikawa is with the Japan women’s national team at the AFC Women’s Asian Cup, where her side has just completed a perfect group stage with a 4-0 victory over Vietnam on Tuesday.
Prediction: Bayern wins, but it’s a nervy fight this time especially with all the Bayern absences. 2-1 after having to come from behind following an early lapse.
It’s Bayern time.
