There had been some chatter of this all season long, but it appears that Joey Aguilar is serious about going after another season of eligibility. The senior quarterback has reportedly been named as a plaintiff
in Diego Pavia’s case against the NCAA to eliminate the currently JUCO eligibility rule.
Front Office Sports had the news on Friday afternoon.
Aguilar is finishing up his third season of college football. He played two seasons at the JUCO level, attending Diablo Valley in California.
Diego Pavia famously was granted a waiver to return to Vanderbilt this season. Pavia has taken nearly the exact same route as Aguilar, spending two seasons playing for the JUCO level New Mexico Military Institute before arriving at New Mexico State. Pavia is now finishing his second season at Vanderbilt, rounding out four seasons at the FBS level.
Aguilar has thrown for 2,941 yards this year for the Volunteers. He’s tossed 22 touchdowns and ten interceptions, still with three games left to play. Tennessee would have Jake Merklinger, George MacIntrye and five-star freshman Faizon Brandon left on the roster for next season should Aguilar leave.
A handful of other players have also joined the lawsuit with Aguilar. We’ll pass along any details that come available.
