The NFL started buzzing Monday with the news breaking that New York Giants star defensive tackle Dexter Lawrence is planning to stay away from the team’s offseason workout program because he wants to be traded. Lawrence’s trade request stems from Lawrence, one of the best players at his position in the game, wanting a raise and the Giants being unwilling to give him one thus far.
Of course, it is all a process and the Giants and Lawrence could easily come to an agreement Still, though, this could be
the beginning of the end for Lawrence in New York and he could end up being dealt this offseason perhaps in the next 16 days before the draft.
So, that begs the question: Should the Las Vegas Raiders be interested in Lawrence.
My quick answer: Yes, hell yes, even.
Lawrence is a game changer and and he is unique player. What would be better than keeping defensive end Maxx Crosby? Putting Lawrence next to him.
Yes, we know the Raiders are moving to a 3-4 base defense (they will be multiple) but Lawrence would definitely fit in. He would be expensive in terms of a contract extension, but the Raiders can make it work.
As far as trade compensation goes, Lawrence, 28, wouldn’t be cheap, either. ESPN reported he would probably fetch a late first-round pick or a high second-round pick. Because interest would be so high, I’d think the Giants could easily get a first-round pick for Lawrence, especially this year when the draft isn’t considered overly deep.
The Raiders would likely have to offer their second-round pick (No. 36) and more to have a chance to land Lawrence. Yes, we know Las Vegas is rebuilding and want all the high-draft picks they can get, but Lawrence is a special player who could help expediate a rebound.
It may not be easy getting Lawrence, but the Raiders definitely should consider it. How do you feel about the Raiders’ pursuing Lawrence? Would it be worth it or not?
