Raúl Asencio has expressed his excitement about Real Madrid’s new chapter under José Mourinho, backing the legendary coach to bring his trademark competitiveness back to the club while also voicing his belief that Los Blancos can immediately compete for the biggest trophies.
Speaking to El Desmarque, the young defender discussed Mourinho’s return to Madrid, the impact the Portuguese manager had on him growing up, and the ambitious project currently being built at the club.
“Now, with the new project,
with Mourinho, I think it’s very exciting and I’m really looking forward to starting,” Asencio said.
Mourinho remains one of the most influential figures in Real Madrid’s modern history, having transformed the club’s mentality during his first spell in charge between 2010 and 2013. Asencio revealed that those years left a lasting impression on him as a young supporter and aspiring footballer.
“I was little and I saw it, how he changed the team, the competitiveness he introduced to the club, the anger and grit… I think those are characteristics that make me who I am as a player.”
The defender believes those qualities could once again help Madrid compete at the highest level and was unequivocal when asked whether Mourinho’s side can challenge for the La Liga title next season.
“Can we win the league next year with Mourinho? Yes, of course. He set the record (100 points and 121 goals). Let’s go for it.”
Asencio also weighed in on midfielder Bernardo Silva who is on the verge of a move to the Spanish capital. The Portuguese international has long been admired across Europe for his technical quality, versatility, and experience at the highest level.
“Bernardo Silva is very, very good, it would be a leap in quality for the team.”
While Madrid continue to be linked with several reinforcements, Asencio emphasized that the dressing room is fully behind the club’s sporting vision and is ready to embrace any additions that can strengthen the squad.
“We will welcome everything that comes with open arms, and we are sure that the project they are doing is incredible.
