The Los Angeles Chargers are heading back to the West Coast empty-handed after a 16-3 loss to the New England Patriots inside Gillette Stadium.
The Chargers just couldn’t get much going on offense all game
long, and it bit them in the butt in the end. Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert completed 19 of 31 passes for 159 yards and ran the ball 10 times for 57 yards. Meanwhile, Patriots quarterback Drake Maye had 17 completions on 29 attempts for 268 yards and a touchdown. He also ran for 68 yards on the ground.
The Patriots and Chargers traded field goals in the second quarter, but the Patriots pulled ahead with a late field goal to end the first half and went up 6-3 at the break. Another field goal at the end of the third quarter gave the Patriots a 9-3 lead going into the fourth. In the final frame, Maye found former Chargers tight end Hunter Henry for a 28-yard touchdown, the only time anyone reached the end zone during the game.
Now the Chargers head home disappointed, and they have to figure out how to fix the team to try and avoid a third straight year of getting eliminated in the wild card round.
